BTC Justice - Aboriginal Court Worker Program

The Aboriginal Court Worker Program is dedicated to assisting Indigenous youth and adults who are in conflict with the criminal justice system. Our mission is to ensure that all clients receive fair, equitable, and culturally sensitive treatment throughout their legal journey.

Mandate
The role of the Aboriginal Courtworker in Saskatchewan is to provide support and guidance to Aboriginal individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Our goal is to “obtain fair, just, equitable, and culturally sensitive treatment” for clients as they navigate the court process.

Program Objectives

  • Focus on Rehabilitation: Prioritize services for first and second-time offenders to support positive outcomes and reduce recidivism.

  • Support for All Individuals: Provide services to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people who are involved in the criminal justice system.

  • Guidance on Legal Rights: Help accused individuals understand their rights, responsibilities, and court procedures.

  • Advocacy for Alternative Measures: Encourage the use of alternative measures by providing information on sentencing options and alternatives tailored to the specific circumstances of the accused.

  • Bridge Cultural Gaps: Reduce cultural and linguistic barriers between Indigenous clients and the justice system, fostering understanding and respect.

  • Cultural Awareness in Justice: Enhance appreciation of Indigenous traditions, values, and languages within the criminal justice system.

Services Provided

  • Explanation of legal rights and responsibilities regarding charges.

  • Assistance in obtaining legal counsel and providing information on Legal Aid services.

  • Support with tracking down charges, arranging voluntary appearances, and coordinating court-related needs like translators or adjournments.

  • Guidance in preparing for sentencing, especially for clients pleading guilty without legal representation.

  • In-court advocacy as a "friend of the court" to ensure that the accused receives appropriate information and support.
